Billions of searches are made on the internet every day. Appearing on the first page of those searches — or not even being known to exist? SEO is what makes that difference.
1. What is SEO?
SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) is the whole of the technical, content and link work done to make your website appear organically (without ads) at the top of search engines such as Google and Bing. When a user runs a search, the search engine moves the most relevant and trustworthy page to the top from among millions of pages. SEO makes sure your site meets those criteria.
2. The three pillars of SEO
- Technical SEO: Covers infrastructure topics such as site speed, mobile compatibility, HTTPS, crawlability and structured data.
- Content SEO: Producing quality, original, useful content for the keywords your audience searches. Content is the heart of SEO.
- Off-page SEO: Links from other trusted sites (backlinks), social signals and brand authority.
3. Why is SEO so important?
The first three results in Google searches take roughly 60% of all clicks. Dropping to the second page means being almost invisible. The advantages SEO offers:
- Sustainable traffic: Visitors keep coming even after the ad budget runs out.
- High conversion rate: Organic users are actively searching for something, so purchase intent is high.
- Brand credibility: Ranking at the top creates a perception of trust in users.
- Low long-term cost: Compared with ads, SEO becomes a far more profitable channel over time.
4. Where should you start with SEO?
The first step is understanding your current state. Use Google Search Console and an SEO tool (Ahrefs, SEMrush or Ubersuggest) to see your site’s technical issues and keyword positions. Then identify which words your audience searches for and build a page/content structure around those words. Slow-loading pages, broken links and mobile incompatibility directly hurt your ranking.
5. When do SEO results show?
SEO is not a channel that gives instant results. Technical fixes show their effect within a few weeks, while content and backlink work leads to concrete ranking gains within 3–6 months. This process takes patience; but once it settles, it brings regular traffic and customers for years.
