How to Start E-commerce?

1. Choose a product and a niche

The first step in starting e-commerce is deciding clearly what you will sell. Choosing a specific niche instead of opening a store with a broad product range both reduces competition and makes it easier to reach your target audience. For demand analysis, look at Google Trends, Amazon Best Sellers and social media trends. Prioritise products with high margins that are easy to ship and readily available.

2. Pick a business model

The core e-commerce business models are:

  • Holding stock (wholesale/retail): You buy products wholesale and sell them retail. Margins are high, but there is storage cost.
  • Dropshipping: You sell without stocking products; when an order comes in, the supplier ships directly to the buyer. Low capital required.
  • Your own production: For handmade or custom products, this is the model with the highest brand value.
  • Digital products: For e-books, courses and software, logistics cost is zero.

3. Choose a platform

Which platform you use directly affects your long-term growth. There are two main paths:

  • Ready-made marketplaces (Trendyol, Hepsiburada, Amazon): Ideal for a fast start; the downsides are commission rates and rule dependency.
  • Your own store (WooCommerce, Shopify, custom software): Provides brand independence and full control. At Tryosoft we offer full support for WooCommerce setup and customisation.

4. Payment and logistics infrastructure

Offer your customers at least two payment options: credit/debit card and bank transfer. Integrate reliable payment providers such as iyzico, PayTR or Stripe. On the shipping side, work with more than one carrier and define your return process clearly. Fast shipping and easy returns directly increase customer satisfaction and repeat purchases.

5. Digital marketing and SEO

Opening your store is only the beginning. For customers to find you, run Google Ads, Meta ads and organic SEO together. Write search-friendly product descriptions, use a fast-loading site and value customer reviews. Content marketing — just like this article — is the lowest-cost traffic source in the long run.
